A consensus is building that the gigawatts of North Sea interconnectors set to be installed by 2021 — linking Norway to Germany, and the UK to Norway, Belgium, France, and possibly Denmark — will be insufficient to effectively incorporate the planned offshore wind energy into the European grid.
The industry believes it would make sense — and be highly cost-effective — if offshore wind farms were linked to more than one country and maybe each other in a so-called meshed grid spanning the North Sea.
